Every day I learn something more about how to live life with chronic pain. It's either that, or my ears just work better when I'm trying to concentrate on anything except how bad I hurt. In any case, I was watching Ellen today and she had a 7 year old piano virtuoso on her show. Normally, my ADD would get the best of me and I would flip the channel, because how exciting does that interview sound? Today, however, I was either too lazy, tired, or whatever and I didn't change the channel. Good thing, because out of the mouth of this 7 year old child was one of the most profound things I have ever heard.
Ellen was asking him what made him want to be so good at playing the piano and his response was "I love the piano. To me, its like a battery is to a cell phone, when it's charged the phone works, and when your heart is charged with what you love then it works." Ok..so...Wow!
So I began to think about how this applies to those of us who live in pain every day. Many times the pain strips us of the things that "charged our heart" and made life worth living. It is difficult in the throws of constant pain to find things that just make our heart sing. However, if what this child of only 7 years says is true, it is when you can find exactly those things...in spite of your obstacles...that everything will work. Now that isn't to say things will be perfect, but if your stuck with living life with pain, how much better would that proposition be if there was at least one thing in life that "charged your heart". Even in pain, life can "work" if there is something to bring that happiness to our heart.
